Cat and Dog X-rays

Digital radiography, or X-rays, is one of the most common diagnostic tools in veterinary medicine, as it allows veterinarians to safely examine pets internally. Our digital pet X-ray unit is used to evaluate the bones, heart, abdominal area, and other areas of a pet’s body. We also have a digital dental X-ray unit to examine the teeth and oral cavity.

Some of the conditions that can be diagnosed using digital X-ray technology include fractures, foreign bodies, dental disease, and heart problems. When compared to film radiography, digital radiography offers the following benefits:

  • X-ray images are produced in a matter of seconds

  • Images can be quickly and easily displayed on a monitor

  • No harmful chemicals are needed for image production

  • Better image quality and clarity

  • Ability to enhance images to show more detail

  • Images can be easily shared digitally, if necessary

Ultrasound

Ultrasound is a quick and painless procedure that uses sound waves to allow us to evaluate your pet’s internal organs without the radiation used in X-rays. An ultrasound is usually recommended when our doctors find certain abnormalities on other diagnostics, such as bloodwork or X-rays.

Ultrasound may also be recommended to diagnose and monitor certain diseases. Because it provides real-time imaging, ultrasound can also be used for confirming pregnancy and monitoring fetal development.

Echocardiograms and Cardiac Workups

Echocardiograms are essentially cardiac ultrasounds that allow our doctors to get a moving picture of your pet’s heart. Using echocardiograms and other cardiac diagnostic procedures, we, along with our consulting cardiologists, are able to assess the current condition of your pet’s heart so we can recommend appropriate treatment and monitoring.

In-House Laboratory at Angel Animal Hospital

Our in-house laboratory allows us to perform tests for three categories of pets: those that are ill, those that will undergo surgery, and those that are healthy. There are many conditions that can only be diagnosed with the results of a blood and/or urine test, such as diabetes, heartworm disease, infection, and organ changes.

If a pet shows physical signs of illness, we typically recommend laboratory work to either confirm or rule out certain conditions. For pre-surgical patients, we recommend blood testing to help ensure that the pet is healthy enough for anesthesia. Lastly, for healthy pets, we may recommend laboratory work to establish a wellness profile. We may also recommend a senior blood panel for pets over the age of 7.
